Materials You Need for a 50-inch TV Wall Mount Installation

Installing a 50-inch TV wall mount may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and materials, DIY enthusiasts can easily accomplish this task. Here’s what you need to get started.

What’s in Your TV Wall Mount Package?

Upon purchasing a 50-inch TV wall mount, the box usually contains the following items:

– Wall mount bracket
– Hardware for attaching the bracket to the wall (screws, washers, and anchors)
– Screws for attaching the TV to the bracket
– A user manual with instructions

These components form the backbone of your TV wall mount installation. However, the wall hardware in the box only suits wood studs behind drywall. Metal studs, concrete, brick and plaster each need different fixings.

Extra Tools and Materials You Might Need

Apart from what comes in the package, you may need additional tools to ensure a smooth installation process:

– Power drill: To make holes in the wall for the wall mount
– Screwdriver: To secure the screws
– Stud finder: To locate the studs in the wall
– Spirit level: To ensure the TV is level once mounted
– Tape measure: To measure the distance between the mounting holes
– Pencil: To mark the drilling points on the wall

Remember, safety is key. Ensure you wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from dust and debris. With all these tools and materials at your disposal, you’re ready to tackle the DIY TV wall mount installation for your 50-inch TV.

Preparing for Installation: Safety and Measurements

When it comes to installing a TV wall mount, two crucial factors to consider are safety and measurements. Proper preparation will not only ensure the TV is securely fastened, but it will also enhance your viewing experience.

Safety Precautions for TV Wall Mount Installation

First and foremost, remember to switch off and unplug all devices before starting the installation process. This can prevent any electrical accidents from occurring.

Next, never attempt to install a TV wall mount alone. Always have a helper to ensure balance is maintained while attaching the mount and TV.

Consider the wall type and use the right tools and fasteners. Wood studs behind drywall take lag bolts driven into the stud; light-gauge metal studs need toggle-style anchors through the stud; poured concrete needs sleeve or wedge anchors hammer-drilled to depth; brick needs anchors set in the brick itself, not the mortar joint. Drywall on its own, with plastic anchors, will not hold a TV.

Finally, remember to neatly manage the cables. A tangled mess of wires is not only an eyesight but can also be a tripping hazard.

Calculating the Perfect Height and Viewing Angle

The perfect height for your TV depends on your seating position and the size of the TV. A common rule of thumb is that the TV should be at eye level when seated.

For optimal viewing angle, the general guideline is that the bottom third of the TV should be at eye level. However, this can vary depending on the size of your TV and the distance from the screen.

Consider using online calculators to determine the perfect height and viewing angle for your specific situation.

Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Your 50-inch TV Wall Mount

Attaching the Mounting Bracket to Your TV

Start by laying the TV face down on a soft, flat surface to prevent any damage. Locate the mounting holes on the back of your TV and align the TV brackets with these holes. Use the screws provided with the mount to secure the brackets to the TV.

Fixing the Wall Mount to the Wall

Next, find the studs and determine the location for the wall mount. Use a level to mark the drill holes on the stud centres. Drill pilot holes, position the wall mount against the wall, aligning the holes, and secure it with lag bolts into the studs. On metal studs or masonry, use the fixings described above instead.

Mounting Your TV on the Wall Mount

With the help of a friend, lift the TV and align the brackets with the wall mount. Slide the TV into place, ensuring it clicks securely onto the mount.

Questions we get asked

50-Inch TV Installation Questions

The questions we get asked most on this one. If yours isn’t here, just ask us.

What does it cost to mount a 50-inch TV?

A fixed or tilt mount on regular drywall starts at $179.99, and a full-motion mount starts at $189.99. Adding in-wall wire concealment starts at $99.99. The bracket is separate unless you take the combo deal, which bundles a full-motion mount and the installation into one price.

Can a 50-inch TV be mounted on a single stud?

Sometimes, with a bracket designed for it, but we prefer to land on two. A 50-inch panel is light enough that a single-stud mount is a real option, and heavy enough that we would rather spread the load if the layout allows it. We decide once we have found what is actually behind the wall.

What tools does a 50-inch install need?

A stud finder that reads more than the first inch, a proper level, a drill matched to the wall material and the right fixings for it. The kit that ships with a mount is rarely the whole story, particularly on masonry, and using the wrong anchor is the single most common reason a mount works loose.

Is a 50-inch TV a good size for a bedroom?

It is the size we fit most often in bedrooms, because it suits the viewing distance from a bed without dominating the room. The bigger decision is height: a bedroom screen usually sits higher than a living room one, since you are watching reclined rather than sitting up.

Can you mount a 50-inch TV and hide the wires?

Yes. On regular drywall we cut two small openings, drop the cables inside the wall and finish both ends with plates, from $99.99. On concrete, brick or stone there is no cavity to use, so we run a paintable surface raceway that disappears once it matches the wall.

How soon can you install a 50-inch TV?

We work 9:00am to 8:00pm seven days a week and can usually be with you the same day or the next. A straightforward 50-inch install on drywall is one visit, and we can quote it from photos without coming out first.
